GP Mentoring

GPMplus - A service Summary

The need for mentorship has been recognised nationally through the GP Forward View, regionally through the experience of the NHS England appraisal process, and locally through LMC surveys.
There are many forms of support available ranging from general wellbeing support, counselling, coaching and through to mentoring. Each of the types of support has it’s place and benefit, however it is mentoring with it’s focus on supporting the mentees through their career development, that has been shown to:
• Aid development, at all stages of an individual’s career.
• Improve retention rates and work performance as well as working relationships.
• Encourage equality and reduce discrimination

The General Practice Mentoring plus (GPMplus) hub model has now been developed to enable the delivery of a streamlined and consistent model of mentoring to:
• GPs including trainee and returning GPs
• practice nurses
• practice/business managers and other qualifying non-clinical staff (with leadership responsibilities)
All mentees will be offered up to 8 hours of mentoring. Mentoring sessions will be delivered in a flexible way to meet the needs of the individual.
It is acknowledged that some mentees may not require 8 hours of mentoring whilst some may benefit from additional sessions; flexibility has been built into the system in order to deliver a tailored approach to mentees based on their needs.

What you can expect

You can expect a professional GP colleague as a mentor who will be available to listen & understand your situation. They can act as a soundboard. They will explore your situation with you in a way that will help you progress. They may reflect your thoughts back to you, to help you ‘throw light’ on things & suggest how you may move forwards. They may also signpost you to other resources that can give you direct advice & experience of additional career avenues.

Who can access this service?

• GPs including trainee, locum and returning GPs
• Practice Nurses
• Practice/Business Managers and other non-clinical staff with leadership/decision making responsibilities
working within the catchment area of Calderdale LMC
GPMplus can be used by anyone from the above list, who would like to explore ways to develop themselves or have a career problem or opportunity they’re not sure how to move forward with. Whilst the mentoring service is aimed at supporting you professionally, we are aware that personal & professional issues intertwine, and you will have the opportunity to discuss anything you wish. We aim to build resilience in the General Practice workforce by allowing you time and space to develop your personal goals.
In some cases you may be advised that mentoring is not suitable for you at the current time. For example if you are currently accessing the NHS Practitioner Health service it may be more beneficial for you to consider mentoring once your health concern has been addressed or is stable.
